An innovation for effective management of dry skin care

Have a look to a new product line for daily care of dry skin in general, and especially for care of dry and itchy skin caused by psoriasis and atopic dermatitis. Core product is a lotion for the daily basic care, completed by shower gel and shampoo. All products contain the magnesium-urea compound in different quantities.

Background

More than 10 % of the population in western countries suffer from dry skin problems, 50% of them are associated to psoriasis and atopic dermatitis. These people need medical emollients for daily care. They spend about 300 to 500 Euro a year.

Dry skin is caused by impaired metabolism in the upper part of the skin, the stratum corneum. This top layer of skin cells is the most important function in maintaining the effectiveness of the so called barrier function. An insufficient barrier function 1. causes lacking of moisturizing substances, 2. physiological biosynthesis of lipids is out of function.

New conception vs. outdated doctrine

To repair the broken down barrier function is the main target of fighting dry skin in general or caused by related diseases. Though claimed by many specialized products in this field, there was no sufficiant and logical conception of managing dry skin‘s daily care with sufficiant care products up to now. Common products often supply dry skin with moisture-retaining substances. Covering the skin’s surface with a product‘s high content of fat or oil can hold back skin moisture. But it is an unphysiological way and often poorly accepted by the user. For maximal efficiency emollients must be applied frequently. It therefore is very important that the emollient chosen is easy to apply and free of greasy feeling on skin’s surface.

An outdated doctrine claims that dry skin needs more lipid. In fact dry skin suffers for moisture! No extra lipid is needed. A sufficient skin barrier is able to produce all the lipid the skin needs.

Synergistic action of magnesium and urea to the barrier function

The conception of magnesium and urea combination realizes a more physiological way of improving impaired skin: The lotion especially leads to a normalization of the barrier function, caused by synergistic actions of magnesium and urea combination:

• Magnesium accelerates skin barrier repair by antiproliferative effect on keratocytes by competitive inhibition of the enzyme systems and inhibition of the production of inflammatory mediators (e.g. phospholipase A₂, lipoxygenase, cytokines).
• Urea increases the moisturisation capacity of the outer lawyer, the stratum corneum, and reduces itching.

Conclusion

Our medical care products (project name ‚Isonta‘) accelerate the repair of the skin’s protective barrier function and thus leads to normalization of the skins‘ s physiological integrity.
